John Krausbauer + David Maranha – John Krausbauer + David Maranha
Here we have yet another 7” Pringle, I mean roof shingle, I mean vinyl single courtesy of violinist John Krausbauer, guest starring organist David Maranha. Why is there laughter at the end of the latter’s last name? Ha! Maran Ha! Just kidding. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Now I can’t stop laughing. Did you know that in addition to being contagious, laughter is actually rhythmic minimalism? I did, or at least I just figured it out right now. If you collapse in a fit of laughter, you will find yourself saying the same word over and over again. “Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!” That is the epitome of rhythmic minimalism right there, folks. But that’s not what you get on this record.
Minimal drones realized through slowly undulating violin and electric guitar are the modus operandi here. Even the title of the track on side 2, “Round and Round and Round,” fits the theme. Unfortunately, the center labels suffer from the dreaded minimal design aesthetic: in this case, a tiny bit of microscopic green text on a vast green background, which is damed near impossible to read. What is the point of making text so tiny and intentionally illegible? There is plenty of space to make it bigger. I suspect the designers who do this kind of thing are just trolling us, or have spent way too much time in art galleries with blank white walls and art consisting of one tiny pile of rocks in the center of a huge empty room.
