Once again, I rested up all morning and afternoon, catching up on writing and Photoshopping photos for this travel journal. In the late afternoon when I ventured outside to eat a few times, I was taken aback by how many new glitzy shops, restaurants and hotels have opened in Ubud since my last visit here three years ago in 2012. There were a heck of a lot of them back then, but now it looks like every inch of every street (in between the gates of temples and family compounds) is completely bricked in with small to medium-sized fancy pants businesses. We’re talking complete gentrification, folks. Every street and back lane in Ubud now looks like Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. It’s pretty crazy. I wonder how much more of this kind of rampant development the environment of the small island of Bali can support?

Disembarking from the AWR Travel bus at the airport in Padang, Sumatra, Indonesia.
This morning, I had to wake up at 6:00 am after only five or six hours of sleep to get ready to leave for the airport at 8:15 am. It was brutal! And to top it all off, the shuttle van ended up being a half hour late. I was stoked I got to say goodbye to Ling, though. It was super fun hanging out and talking and laughing with her every night. She is one of the best people I’ve met during the long, weird, three-month journey (so far) I’ve been on. When the AWR Travel van finally pulled up, I realized it was actually a small bus that could hold 15 or so people.

Ling welcomes you to the Hello Guesthouse in Bukittinggi, Sumatra, Indonesia.
Welcome to day two of the bad cold I caught a couple of nights before. Fortunately, it pretty much peaked today. (Last night, I had the runniest nose of all time. I had to blow it every minute or so. Seriously, I’ve never had to honk my nose that many times in my entire life.) For most of the day, I just laid in bed and got some rest–only venturing outside briefly to eat two or three times.
