Late this afternoon, I went on a walk north of Ubud on a trail that passed through a rice field called Subak Juwuk Manis. Starting out as a narrow singletrack that snaked its way among various buildings and walled-off family compounds set in between deep, steep ravines, the trail eventually opened up as it emerged from the dense foliage and proceeded on out into the rice fields. Although I enjoyed a few scattered moments of sunlight that radiated down upon every surface, our nearest star unfortunately got mostly blocked out by a bunch of grey and black clouds.

After a couple of kilometers, the trail hung a sharp right and shortly joined Jalon Kajeng, a narrow paved lane which offered a pleasant and scenic stroll past family compound gates, warungs, villas and villages–eventually meeting Jalon Raya Ubud, the town’s main east-west road. For dinner, I stopped by the Three Monkeys, where I was dismayed to find out they no longer serve gado gado. Hmmm, I wonder why they changed their menu? I opted for a bowl of vegetable soup instead, which went down well out back with a super nice view of some calm and lovely rice fields.
