Tropical Heat Tour: Myanmar Part 9

Mandalay, Myanmar
Today, a semi-day off was had by a person known as me. I hired a trishaw driver who always hangs out in front of the Royal Guest House to pedal me a kilometer over to Marie Min’s Indian vegetarian restaurant, which is my favorite place to eat in Mandalay. Tucked away on a balcony in a back alley, it’s one of the few establishments in Myanmar whose food doesn’t have that odd taste. The curry dishes are the best, and the fruit shakes are good, too; but, like all shakes in Southeast Asia, they consist of just a tiny bit of fruit whipped up with ice and water and taste like slightly flavored air. They’re not thick and really sweet like shakes and smoothies in the U.S. After dinner–or was it a really late lunch?–I schlepped through the neighborhood around the Royal Guest House and snapped a few photos of grimy buildings and odd signs in the beautiful light of sunset. Later in the evening, I went to eat at a European food restaurant called BBB, but their prices were way too high, so I returned for another helpin’ at Marie Min’s for half the price, then called it a night.
