Natasha Barrett – Isostasie
Composer Natasha Barrett works in the realm of acousmatic, electro-acoustic, instruments with live electronics, sound installations, multi-media works and computer music improvisation. Born in the United Kingdom in 1972, in the 1990s she studied at the University of Birmingham and City University, where she received degrees; followed by a move to Oslo, Norway thanks to a grant. She is now a freelance teacher and composer there.
Isostasie, a CD released in 2002 by Montreal, Canada acousmatic label empreintes DIGITALes, is crammed full of field recording-laden electro-acoustic music, featuring 10 long tracks realized from 1999-2001. We’re talking well over an hour’s worth of crackling fires, wind storms, forlorn quietude deep inside some late-night woods, insect swarms, mysterious whispering, threatening weather systems, and far-off misty vistas. Influenced by aspects of the natural environment like snow, rainfall (and other meterological forces), the arctic midnight sun, animal dialog in the jungle and even an Industrial Revelation or two, the result is a music that is as lovely as a desolate winter landscape.
