Tetuzi Akiyama + John Krausbauer – Gift
John Krausbauer is a composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Oakland, California. His work involves drones, repetition, duration, alternate tunings, maximum volumes, and stroboscopic lighting. John has performed across North America, Europe, and Japan in basements, sidewalks, rock clubs, colleges, churches, and art museums. Since 2004, a whole Coleman cooler-load of his recordings have been released on independent labels in the US, Europe, and Japan.
On the 7” single Gift, John brandishes a violin and sets the house on fire with the Japanese experimental guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama. Side one offers up “A Prayer” in the form of a thick sleeping bag full of distorted guitar drone courtesy of Tetuzi that acts as a bed for John’s violin as he makes it squeal and arc across the sky. You would think that the sole other track on this platter, “An Omen,” would come before “A Prayer” since it’s, you know, an omen and all. But no, there it is on side two acting like a complete and total copycat of “The Gift.”
