    Pole – CD 1, 2, 3

    Pole - CD 1

    Pole - CD 2

    Pole - CD 3

Some of my favorite music of the past several years has been the totally mesmerizing minimal electronica that has been released out of Germany since the mid ’90s. Names like Gramm, Oval, Pluramon, Senking, Summer DSP, To Rococo Rot and Visor have been consistently keeping all of my laundry rotating in mid-air. And now Berlin’s Pole is completely floating it out the door. Mastering engineer Stefan Betke has been operating as Pole for several years now—employing the broken namesake Waldorf-4 Pole filter to subversively decreate deep, dub-infused rhythms with the filter doling out random-sounding snaps, defective crackling and popping fires, and an overall aura of dim-yet-detailed depth. The pleasure really kicks in when track three on CD 1, “Kirschenessen” adds some unbelievably beautiful, sparse synth stabs and melodies which come in all quiet, dull and muted, then gradually increase in volume and treble into the highest of tinny-tin-tins. Not to mention some ecstatically-held Oval-like tones loosely thrown in. As I soak in the layers of sonic detritus, I lean back and feel wave after wave of warm goose flesh travel from my legs all the way up my body.
