Dancing drummers (detail) at the Plaza de Armas in Santiago, Chile.
From the balcony of the Hostel Plaza de Armas, I saw a group of five drummers putting on a show in the plaza down below. Using pulleys and long sticks, they pounded out some commanding rhythms using only a kick drum and a small cymbal mounted on each of their backs. Sometimes, one of the drummers would twirl around and around like a whirling dervish, almost colliding with people who were trying to throw money in their tip jar. It was really hilarious. I hope I get to see them again while I’m down on the ground. Since the wi-fi in Rapa Nui was too slow to use (practically almost non-existent), I spent the whole day again inside the Hostel Plaza de Armas catching up on Photoshopping my photos and updating my blog posts. I only went outside once to go to the produce market.
