Have you ever had a staring contest with Tony the Tiger? Well, now you have. The zoo at Parque San Martin in Mendoza, Argentina.

I took bus number 200 all the way out to the west end of Parque San Martin, where my goal was to visit the zoo. Once again, I didn’t see my destination in time and ended up getting stuck on the bus for a half mile beyond it. As I jumped off the bus and tried to cross the street, another bus 200 that I needed to catch back to the zoo passed right in front of me. Argh! So, I just climbed on the next random bus that came along and told him to drop me off at the zoo. When I walked up to the window at the zoo, a lady there told me it was closed. Double argh! (A clerk at the hostel later told me the zoo was closed permanently due to negligent management, and is being transformed into an eco park.)

So, I just spent the afternoon walking back east through sections of the park I had never seen before. The whole of Parque San Martin is really giant and very pleasant. I passed by many kinds of lovely trees and recreational areas, including campgrounds, playgrounds, hiking paths, a huge gym, a man made lake and much more. It was all gorgeous to see in the late afternoon sunlight. After a bite to eat back at the hostel, I spent the remainder of the golden hour walking around central Mendoza, soaking in the atmospheric tree-lined streets one last time before I climb on a bus to Santiago, Chile tomorrow.
