Danau Toba, Sumatra, Indonesia
A view of the lake from Romlan Guesthouse in Tuk Tuk, Danau Toba, Sumatra, Indonesia.
I spent all last night and all day today alternating back and forth between sleeping, lying awake sweating with a headache and a fever, and puking out one end and emitting diarrhea from the other. That E. coli-tainted pancake really did a number on me! I felt very weak, so all I did was lay in bed the entire time. I was not a happy camper! Once again, people raised a ruckus down at the lake, but not as bad as yesterday. In addition, for at least four or five hours, from late morning until early afternoon, I was also subjected to a non-stop pounding sound. When I’d finally had enough, I went outside to investigate and see if I could put a stop to it.

It turned out to be a guy up in a tree pounding on a limb with a hatchet. The owner of the Romlan Guesthouse, Marion, happened to be right there working on some landscaping, so I nicely asked her if she could have that guy finish up his pounding tomorrow because I was not feeling well at all, and I was going to check out in the morning anyway. In a very rude tone, she said she was lucky she found someone to do that work. She never apologized for the noise and just pretty much dismissed me. Luckily, the annoying racket “only” lasted another hour. I had been blasting music out of a little travel speaker all day to drown out all of the noise, but I was tired of that, too. Around 7:00 pm, the sky let loose with a amazing torrential downpour that lasted several hours, and it continued to drizzle after that until well past midnight. I wonder if a bunch of people got trapped at the ever-popular Jenny’s Cafe?
