Tropical Heat Tour: Bali Part 15

    Tuesday, July 17, 2012
    Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Let’s talk about ceiling fans. Someone was sitting in my usual table at Taman Curry today, so I grabbed the only other spot with a ceiling fan. As I gently pulled down on the cord, the plastic handle at the bottom slid off into my hand, leaving an exposed bit of wire dangling in the air. Seems this fan, which looked just like the other one, had a small on-off switch on the handle, wheras the other one was just a pull-down type cord with no switch. Right when it happened, the waitress told me that the fan was “no working.” I thought that they would make me pay to get it fixed, but after I ate two small meals over a three-hour period of laptop work, they never said anything as I paid my bill.

That was mini-disaster number three on this trip so far, after the electric outlet adapter debacle and another episode I forgot to mention in which I accidentally bonked my elbow into the side of a girl’s head who worked at a Padang food joint. It wasn’t that bad, I said sorry and she just seemed a little embarrassed as she scurried away. Oh, and another time, I rolled my ankle slightly when I stepped into a little hole on the street, which caused two Balinese girls sitting nearby to squeal. They thought I was going down, but I recovered and my ankle was fine. I’m telling you, if you let your guard down for one second, you could break a leg in this town. So, all in all, this was a much-needed rest day that ended with some late-night conversation about all things Bali with fellow tourists Elena and Katia, who I mentioned before, and Julia, who quit her job in Lynchburg, Virginia to travel the world for a while.
