The Keffer Family – Tales of the Mushroom People
As head of the Poison Pie Publishing House, David Keffer has spent years writing novels, poetry and stories, and filling the noggins of netherworld nutcases with in-depth knowledge of Japanese avant-musician Keiji Haino over at the Unofficial Keiji Haino Website. Now he has teamed up with his family to produce the book Tales of the Mushroom People, a story of an epic search and rescue mission complete with a classic battle of good vs. evil. This war is not faught by actual humans, of course, but rather adorable, colorful, fanciful, felt fingerpuppets called Mushroom People bearing names like Doomshroom, Moonshroom, Roboshroom, Freakshroom, Plumeshroom, Strawshroom, Snowshroom, Crystalshroom and Myxomycetes.
Other vivid characters like False Morel, Stinky Squid, Turkey Tail and the Stone Grandfathers also make an appearance. The tale centers around the main character, a shroom called Poison Pie, and the massive crew–comprised of the shrooms listed above–that he assembles to find his cousin, Princess Pie, who was allegedly abducted by the evil Zombieshroom. All of the fingerpuppet action takes place in beautiful, exotic scenery that the Keffer family visited and photographed during an extended stay in South Korea. Although the witty, funny, intelligent text is full of big words, it’s perfect to read aloud to kids at bedtime. You don’t have to be a child to enjoy this book, but it sure wouldn’t hurt. A second worthy volume, Tales of the Mushroom People II: Call of Cthulhushroom, is also available.
