I took off today to rest and catch up on writing and processing photos for this travel journal. In the afternoon, I walked a half mile over to Roemah Indonesian Kitchen, where I ordered rice with egg, some French fries and a strawberry shake. The super nice and smiley female staff also gave me a couple of free sweets with my shake. I noticed that they kept looking at me, I guess because I look as exotic to them as they, in their brightly colored hijabs, do to me. I was surprised Roemah was open, as it was Indonesia’s Independence Day, and most shops and restaurants were closed. I was also shocked at how little traffic was on the streets, and by the fact that I could walk on the sidewalks pretty much everywhere, which is nearly impossible in Medan 70% of the time on normal days. Usually, the sidewalks are completely blocked off by scores of motorcycles and goods stacked up out in front of the shops.
