Oh, look! A family temple gate got all dolled up for a ceremony in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia.

On my last day in beautiful Bali, I took it easy and just snacked at my usual spots: Warung Kacu and Warung Dayu, and, of course, I just couldn’t resist one more of those oddly sweet but delicious cheese pizzas at Bamboo Cafe. I highly recommend it if you ever visit Ubud. I hit the hay early around 11:00 pm, as I had to wake up at 6:00 am to get ready for a taxi to shuttle me to the airport. Reflecting back upon my one month visit to this island, I would say my favorite experiences were visiting the gamelan foundry in Sawan, hiking through the beautiful rice fields and countryside around Ubud, looking at all of the intricately carved Hindu temples, attending a temple ceremony in Bangli, witnessing the royal cremation procession and ceremony in Ubud and making friends with Nur Astika, from whom I bought all of my tickets to the gamelan / dance shows around town. Then there are all of the little amazing things: weaving my way across the street through all of the crazy motorcycle traffic, lumbering up and down the steep 15″ high steps (twice as high as those in the West), letting my eyes soak in all of the amazing textures everywhere: on the streets, sidewalks, buildings, shops, statues and temples. And there’s so much more! I hope someday you’ll discover the island of Bali for yourself.
